Description

The Hollenberg Station on the Cottonwood River in Washington County, Kansas, served as a respite for travelers on the Oregon-California Trail as well as for riders of the Pony Express. While in operation, the Hollenberg Station represented one of the few places where goods and services could be attained along an otherwise desolate trail that traversed through what is now Northeast Kansas. Established between the years of 1857 and 1858, the station was one of many entrepreneurial endeavors undertaken by Gerat Hollenberg. Images are included in the dissertation.
