Description
The Lone Elm Campground Swale is located in Lone Elm Park at the southernmost edge of Olathe in Johnson County, Kansas. This single swale is in a city park situated along the combined route of the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California trails as it headed southwest out of Westport, Missouri to present-day Gardner, Kansas where, the Santa Fe Trail split-off from the Oregon and California trail. The nominated 2.5-acre discontinuous site contains two property types as defined in the revised Historic Resources of the Santa Fe Trail multiple property nomination: one Transportation Site {Trail Segment subtype) in the form of a swale and an example of a Monument and Memorial, the Lone Elm Daughters of the American Revolution marker. The report specifically mentions the archaeological investigations on pages 14-15.
