In the mid-1800s, courageous Mormon men and women crossed trails passing through some of the most inhospitable terrain on the continent. Some campsites along these trails are still littered with discards, and adobe ruins and rock foundations mark spots where wayfarers found sanctuary. The author endeavors to help the reader find and enjoy the historic spots along southern Arizona’s segment of two important overland routes: the Mormon Battalion and Butterfield Trails, and develop an intense interest in preserving them for future generations.
