Only some half-dozen of the adverse encounters between Indians and emigrants on the Oregon and California Trails can be termed “”massacre.”” The relations of the people of the Snake Country – Shoshoni, Northern Paiutes, Bannocks – with the emigrants, Indian agents, Army, traders, trappers, and explorers are presented so the reader may better understand and conclude what occurred in these encounters.
