Overview

Lucinda B. Wright was born in 1806 in south-central Kentucky, the eldest child of Gabriel and Elizabeth Watt. She married James Birchfield and moved to Illinois where she had three children. After her husband’s death she married Thomas Huston Wright in 1836 and had four more children. In 1852 the couple sold their farm, and in 1853 they started their overland journey to Oregon.

Lucinda Birchfield Wright died June 25, 1853, on the Sublette Cutoff at age 47; the cause of her death is unknown. She was buried on the side of the road, wrapped in a blanket. Her family reached Salem, Oregon in September.

Location

Approximately 15 miles east of Names Hill and La Barge, Wyoming

The site is open to the public on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
